Wing Commander IV: restored space opera for PC
In Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom – 30th Anniversary Edition, Christopher Blair returns to service after the war against the Kilrathi. But peace does not mean security: tensions between the Terran Confederation and the border worlds threaten to escalate into a new conflict. As a pilot, you help shape the course of the story through gripping space battles and narrative decisions.
Electronic Arts released the newly restored 2026 PC version on November 5. Unlike a deluxe edition with mere extras, it combines restored film sequences, a technical adaptation of the original 1996 game and community developments in a standalone executable release.
Restored film sequences and well-known actors
The cast includes Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, John Rhys-Davies and Tom Wilson. The storyline relies heavily on staged film scenes and decisions between missions. For this anniversary edition, EA says more than 275 FMV sequences were prepared from rediscovered master tapes. Optionally, the film sequences can also be upscaled.
The technical improvements
The integrated Wing Commander IV Enhancement Patch technology from the community enables, according to EA, up to 60 frames per second in the game, higher-resolution videos, improved detail rendering and additional settings for gamepads, joysticks and widescreen cockpits. The base game remains a cinematic space flight simulator with a single-player campaign and tactical battles.
Manuals, reference cards and other bonus materials are part of the re-release. These included documents and improvements are not standalone DLC products.
Steam version, languages and PC requirements
The restored Windows version is listed on Steam as app 2008750 and is also available on GOG and via the EA app. Steam lists German and English with voice audio and subtitles, plus French for interface and subtitles. According to Steam, the Windows version requires Windows 10, a CPU with 1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 9.0c-compatible graphics card and 26 GB of storage space. A native new console version of the 2026 restoration is not confirmed.
