Wing Commander: the 1990 space classic in a revised version
Wing Commander: 35th Anniversary Edition brings the first part of Origin Systems’ legendary space series back to modern Windows PCs. As a combat pilot of the Terran Confederation, you fly missions against the Kilrathi Empire. Your performance in battle shapes the course of the campaign while you meet different fighters, enemies and mission objectives.
Electronic Arts released this restored version on Nov 5, 2026. The original space simulator came out in 1990. The Anniversary Edition includes revised executable versions and community improvements, not just cosmetic extras or a collector’s pack.
Original DOS version and Kilrathi Saga
EA includes both the DOS version and the Windows port from The Kilrathi Saga, which was previously hard to get, in the 35th Anniversary Edition. The Windows version includes the community-developed Wcdx improvements. These include more stable game speed, controller support, windowed mode and modernized visuals.
The DOS version uses the WCAT enhancements from AllTinker to better reproduce the gameplay, audio playback and control feel of classic 386 and 486 systems. The Secret Missions 1 & 2 expansions can be selected in the integrated Kilrathi Saga variant, so there are no separate DLC game keys to set up.
Space combat from the cockpit view
You fly your fighter from the cockpit, deploy onboard guns and missiles, and face enemy squadrons. The missions are linked by crew dialogue and an ongoing story. The historical look and gameplay mechanics are retained, while the technical execution has been adapted for modern PCs.
PC version and languages
Steam lists the restored PC version under app ID 1996640 as a Windows game with single-player mode, Steam Cloud and partial controller support. Only English is explicitly confirmed as a interface language, so no German localization is confirmed. Steam Deck can run it through Proton compatibility, but there is no native Linux version. Electronic Arts also sells the game through GOG and the EA app.
