DLCs and expansions

The large single-player expansion Freedom Cry puts Adéwalé at the center. The former first mate of the Jackdaw travels to Saint-Domingue and gets caught up in a liberation struggle. The add-on takes place about 15 years after the main story and was originally released in Dec 2013.

Further add-on packs add equipment, clothing and customization options for the Jackdaw. Season Pass and Edition bundles are not standalone native versions of the base game.

Jackdaw and naval battles

The Jackdaw is Edward's ship and also the basis of its own progression system. Looted resources can be used to upgrade the hull, cannons and other ship components. Cannon battles, boarding actions and convoy hunts are part of the recurring gameplay.

Ship equipment determines which stronger enemies can be defeated on the open sea.

Caribbean and pirate world

The open world includes Havana, Kingston, Nassau and numerous smaller islands. Sunken treasures, shipwrecks and hunting grounds complement the missions. Historical figures such as Blackbeard, Charles Vane and Anne Bonny meet Edward over the course of the story.

The interplay between coastal towns, tropical islands and the open sea is a key feature of the game structure.
