FIFA 22

FIFA 22 is EA Sports' football simulation for the 2021/22 season. You play with licensed clubs and national teams, control individual footballers or take on the development of a club as a manager. The game combines classic matches with Career, Street football and the Ultimate Team offered at the time.

Electronic Arts released FIFA 22 on Oct 1, 2021. The online services were shut down on Nov 4, 2024. Offline modes such as Kick Off and the local career remain the core of a match that can still be played today.

FIFA 22 was released on Oct 1, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. At the same time, a standalone Nintendo Switch version called Legacy Edition launched. The now discontinued streaming platform Google Stadia also received a version at the time.

The official online services have been shut down since Nov 4, 2024. EA Play already removed FIFA 22 from its game catalogue on Jun 30, 2024.

FIFA 22 was released natively for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On Nintendo Switch, a separate Legacy Edition was released with revised squads and presentation, but largely unchanged gameplay compared with FIFA 21 on Switch.

The HyperMotion technology of the consoles of that new generation was limited to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PC and older consoles, a different motion animation was used. Google Stadia also offered HyperMotion but was shut down on Jan 18, 2023.

In FIFA 22, you control your team from the classic football perspective. Passes, crosses, runs, tackles and shots determine the course of play. The game reworked goalkeeper movement and ball physics, while the so-called Explosive Sprint allows short bursts of acceleration when attacking and defending.

The tactics can be set to different attacking plans. For example, passing and player positioning can differ significantly depending on the formation.

The PC version requires at least Windows 10 (64-bit), an Intel Core i3-6100 or AMD Athlon X4 880K, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7850, each with 2 GB graphics memory. The Steam Store lists 50 GB of free storage space.

For the recommended configuration, EA lists an Intel Core i5-3550 or AMD FX-8150 and a GeForce GTX 670 or Radeon R9 270X. The required RAM remains at 8 GB.

HyperMotion uses motion capture from real 11-vs-11 matches to better align team movements and animations. Electronic Arts combined these recordings with machine-generated transitions between movements.

The technology is part of the PS5 and Xbox Series versions as well as the Stadia version at the time. Neither the PC version of FIFA 22 nor PS4, Xbox One or the Switch Legacy Edition have this HyperMotion implementation.

In Manager Career, you manage squads, transfers, training and fixtures. New was the option to create your own club and lead it through the league. This includes club name, stadium design and sporting goals.

In Player Career, you develop a professional footballer from youth player to first-team regular. Training performance, appearances and decisions shape the course of your career. Both career modes can be played locally, apart from the discontinued online services.

With Create a Club you can place your own club into the league system in Manager Career instead of an existing team. You choose kits, crests, stadium elements and the base strength of the squad. Afterwards you must develop the team both sportingly and financially.

Through the selectable settings, you can play either an ambitious newly promoted club or a long road up from the lower table positions.

Career mode gives your player development goals and lets him gain experience through playing time and performance. Manager decisions and ratings of your appearances determine whether you start in the lineup or sit on the bench first.

Individual abilities are improved through progression systems. The match remains a regular football game, in which you can choose to focus on your own pro and his role on the pitch.

VOLTA Football brings together small teams and tight pitches away from the big stadiums. The rules and pace are based on street football, where tricks, quick passes and short shots stand out more.

FIFA 22 added new special abilities and progression options. The originally available connected VOLTA offerings are affected by the shutdown of the online services.

FIFA Ultimate Team was the card-collecting mode of FIFA 22. Players could add footballers to their squad via cards and use them in various competitions. The offering included online matches, squad building and rotating challenges.

FIFA 22 Ultimate Team can no longer be used online. Electronic Arts shut down the online services on November 4, 2024. Anyone playing FIFA 22 today should therefore not expect an active FUT marketplace or online competitions.

Pro Clubs allowed several people to each control their own footballer on the same team. Player roles, teamwork and individual development were at the center. The mode relied on online services and has not been regularly available since they were shut down.

For shared matches, local play with multiple controllers remains an alternative on suitable platforms.

FIFA 22 depicts the world of football in the 2021/22 season with licensed clubs, international competitions and numerous stadiums. These include European top leagues and the UEFA Champions League. The teams and transfers of the time continue to shape the game today.

As a football game from a past season, FIFA 22 does not contain an automatically current squad for 2026. Official online support ended in 2024.

The Nintendo Switch version carries the addition Legacy Edition. Electronic Arts updated teams, kits, stadiums and parts of the presentation. Significant gameplay innovations compared with FIFA 21 on Switch were not developed for this version.

The Switch edition therefore offers neither the HyperMotion system of the PS5 and Xbox Series versions nor the same technical scope. For Nintendo Switch players, however, it is a standalone release with the season content of the time.

The online services for FIFA 22 were shut down on November 4, 2024. Online seasons, connected Pro Clubs matches and the online offering of Ultimate Team are therefore no longer regularly accessible.

Offline modes such as Kick Off, local matches and Career remain usable on a playable installed version. Some features may still require an account or activation check. Technical accessibility depends on the specific platform and license.

FIFA 22 is no longer offered for new purchase on the Steam Store. The game was also removed from EA Play on June 30, 2024. Copies already acquired can still be downloaded or launched depending on platform and license.

Physical editions exist for older consoles. If you buy a used copy, note that all official online modes have been discontinued since November 2024.

FIFA 22 offers German menus, on-screen text and voice audio on PC. You can play classically with a controller. Keyboard input is also supported on PC.

Most actions can be performed at different control levels depending on your own skill, while training drills make it easier to get started with passing, shooting and defending.
