What is MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls?

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a team fighting game from Arc System Works featuring Marvel heroes and villains. Two people face off, each controlling a team of four characters. The battles use active character switching, supportive attacks and combinations that build on each other.

The game brings the comic characters together with the striking art style and fast combat system of the Japanese fighting game studio. Besides competitive matches, there are modes for learning the mechanics and a story-driven single-player experience.

Platforms

Confirmed native platforms are Windows PC and PlayStation 5. The PC version is sold through Steam; the PS5 version through PlayStation. The developer mentions cross-platform online multiplayer between the two versions.

There is currently no confirmed native release for Xbox, Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. The PC system requirements should be distinguished from PlayStation 5 features such as DualSense support.

Gameplay

In a match, two players face each other, each using four Marvel characters as a team. The active character is supported by assists and team switching. Combos can chain individual attacks together and be extended with the abilities of the other team members.

This is not an eight-player battle at the same time: the format describes the size of the character teams. The arenas also feature transitions and environment changes that can alter the look and layout of fights.

DLCs and expansions

The Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass adds four playable characters and one arena to the base game. It starts with Phoenix Cyclops on Nov 2, 2026, which also brings the Classic and Legacy costumes.

The remaining content was presented on Oct 11, 2026 in the official PlayStation trailer: Jane Foster as Thor is planned for Winter 2027. Venom is set to arrive in Spring 2027 together with the new Klyntar Arena, and Jubilee follows in Summer 2027. There are no exact release dates yet for these three characters. The trailer shows Jane Foster with Mjölnir and lightning attacks, without revealing all the details of her combat mechanics.

The pass is additional content for the existing PC and PlayStation 5 versions; it does not announce a new native platform version. Deluxe and Ultimate Editions include the pass, but remain editions of the same base game.

Phoenix Cyclops and his risky transformation

Phoenix Cyclops adds a new take on Scott Summers to the existing character roster. He combines his Optic Blasts at short and long range with fire-based attacks that control areas of the battlefield.

By using Optic Blasts, he charges up what are called Solar Shards. Once he has collected four Shards, he can temporarily transform into Dark Phoenix. The form greatly boosts his attack power but uses up life energy. Weighing up attack pressure against remaining health is therefore the core of his special fighting system.

Characters, factions and team composition

At launch, the base game includes 20 playable characters from Marvel stories. They form a versatile roster of different fighting styles and roles, from which you can build your own teams of four.

Phoenix Cyclops will be the first character announced after launch in the Year 1 Pass. His design draws on the Dark Phoenix storyline and deliberately differs from the classic Cyclops. Which team compositions he changes the most can only be reliably judged after his release.

Local duels and online lobbies

The PS5 and PC versions support competitive matches between two players, including crossplay. Local versus battles and online lobbies are also planned. The lobby sizes of up to 64 people given by the publisher refer to meeting points, not to the number of fighters actually competing in one match at the same time.

Training and practice modes are used to learn combos, team switching and defense. The PC version requires an internet connection for the corresponding online features.

Story episodes and training

Besides competitive fighting, the game offers an Episode Mode with standalone stories and further solo features. Training and challenges introduce characters, special attacks and the team battle system.

The narrative content is separate from the permanently available practice and online offering. The title is therefore not limited to tournament matches against other players.

Game series

Arc System Works is developing the game in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation Studios. PlayStation Publishing is the publisher of the PC version. The game uses characters and motifs from the Marvel Universe and is not a spin-off of the Marvel Rivals game mechanics.

The studio is known, among other things, for its own fighting game series. For Tōkon, its experience with team battles combines with a distinctive visual approach to well-known Marvel characters.
