Risk of Rain 2: Survivors of the Void

Survivors of the Void is the first major expansion for Risk of Rain 2. It adds new playable characters, dangerous creatures, stages and items to the action roguelike. The power of the Void changes not only the appearance of enemies but also how collected equipment works.

The expansion requires the base game and adds to its replayable single-player and co-op runs.

Survivors of the Void was released on March 1, 2022 for PC. The Xbox versions followed on November 8, 2023, the Nintendo Switch version on November 23, 2023. PlayStation players can also play the expansion on PS4 and PS5.

On August 27, 2024, the standalone PS5 version of Risk of Rain 2 was released. The expansion is also available for this version.

The expansion is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. It must match the version of the base game being used. On Switch 2, the Switch version may be usable via backward compatibility. This does not create a standalone Switch 2 version.

The release on newer consoles should not be confused with the versions originally offered for PS4 and Xbox One.

The Void expands the random selection of enemies and loot. Whoever picks up a corrupted item also changes the normal copies of that item in the inventory. This way, familiar combinations can suddenly gain new strengths and drawbacks.

The basic structure with teleporters, ever stronger enemies and changing builds remains. The new options make decisions about individual items more important.

Survivors of the Void adds more than 40 items, four stages, additional enemies and new elite variants. An alternative ending expands the possible paths through a run. The content appears within Risk of Rain 2 and is not a standalone game.

The additional Simulacrum mode shifts the focus to successive waves of enemies.

The Windows version lists at least an Intel Core i3-6100 or AMD FX-8350, 4 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 580 or Radeon HD 7870, and DirectX 11. Recommended are a Core i5-4670K or Ryzen 5 1500X and a GTX 680 or Radeon HD 7970. According to Steam, 4 GB of free storage is required.

The store details still list Windows 7. However, the current Steam client requires Windows 10 or later.

Railgunner takes out dangerous single targets from long range. Its scope lets you aim at weak points. A well-placed volley rewards precise timing, while a shock device enables quick changes of position.

Railgunner can be selected directly after buying the expansion.

Void Fiend switches between different abilities depending on the growing corruption. His attacks change temporarily once the Void takes over. If you want to use the stronger skills, you need to plan for switching between the states.

The character is unlocked by completing an additional challenge.

Fourteen new Void items can transform conventional effects. The altered Ukulele, for example, works more strongly on individual targets than on larger groups. Standard items, lunar items and equipment items are also added.

The interplay of effects is relevant in later runs too, because loot and character abilities keep combining in new ways.

New locations include the Aphelian Sanctuary, the Sulfur Pools and the Siphoned Forest. The areas bring their own visibility, paths and enemies. The Void-shaped creatures and constructs also change the encounters on Petrichor V.

Gup is one of the additional enemies players may encounter in these runs.

Simulacrum is an additional survival mode with consecutive waves of enemies. Instead of the usual journey from teleporter to teleporter, the challenge is to hold your ground against increasingly difficult waves of attacks with growing equipment.

The mode therefore offers a different structure than the regular runs.

In online co-op, it is enough for one person in the lobby to own Survivors of the Void. Then the other players can also face the additional enemies, stages and items. The two new playable characters and permanent unlocks, however, remain reserved for owners of the expansion.

The multiplayer mode of the base game supports up to four people.

The PC version supports a German user interface as well as other languages, including English, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. Full German voice audio is not listed in the Steam language overview. Full controller support is listed on Steam.
