Risk of Rain 2

Risk of Rain 2 is a third-person action roguelike in which survivors explore the hostile planet Petrichor V. Each run combines changing enemies and locations with collected items that change your playstyle. The game can be played alone or in online co-op with up to three other people.

The PC launch took place on Mar 28, 2019, initially in Early Access. Hopoo Games released the PC version 1.0 on Aug 11, 2020. The console versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch appeared as early as Aug 30, 2019, while the separate versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S followed on Aug 27, 2024.

This means the dates for the early console launch and the completed PC version differ. Major expansions have since expanded the game further; the most recent, Hallowed Concepts, came out on Oct 8, 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Risk of Rain 2 is available natively for PC (Windows), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The PS5 and Xbox Series versions are standalone console versions and not merely backward compatibility. On PlayStation, according to Sony, a purchase includes the PS4 and PS5 versions.

Important restriction since 2026: 2K only develops new content for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. PS4, Xbox One and Switch remain playable for existing content, but will not receive any further content expansions. Hallowed Concepts is therefore not a native release on the older consoles, even if individual store bundles are shown there. 2K also announced it will end the cross-generation co-op connections PS4–PS5 and Xbox One–Xbox Series with a corresponding console update; the official notice still describes them as possible until then.

Each run combines pre-built stages in changing order with random enemies, loot and events. After exploring a stage, the activated teleporter leads to the next section, while enemies become increasingly dangerous over the course of a run. Depending on the route, the run ends with a boss fight or the choice to keep going.

The centerpiece is stackable items: attack, healing, movement and defense effects interact and create unusual builds. The playable survivors differ in abilities and combat range. Alternative skills and the unlockable Artifacts change individual rules of a run. Alongside the regular runs there are the Prismatic Trials as an additional challenge.

Since the October 2026 update, six of the original survivors have additional unlockable skills: Commando, Huntress, Acrid, Artificer, Engineer and REX. The optional Karma System, also added, can make the final showdown on the moon more demanding. Both changes are part of the base game update and do not require buying Hallowed Concepts.

Four content expansions now belong to the development of Risk of Rain 2. They require the base game and add to its replayable runs, rather than being standalone sequels.

• Survivors of the Void (Mar 1, 2022 on PC): new survivors, enemies, stages and items shaped by the Void.
• Seekers of the Storm (Aug 27, 2024): more characters and regions, plus a route to the fight against the False Son.
• Alloyed Collective (Nov 18, 2025 on PC, Feb 5, 2026 on Switch): new areas, two survivors, drone mechanics and enemies of the Solus collective.
• Hallowed Concepts (Oct 8, 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S): the Acolyte and the Executioner, new trials, bosses and the interplay of curses and hallowed items. The N’Tormat pages expand decisions within runs.

Release dates for a DLC can differ between platforms. In particular, PS4, Xbox One and Switch will receive no new expansions after the generation change announced by 2K.

For the Windows version, Steam lists at minimum an Intel Core i3-6100 or AMD FX-8350, a GeForce GTX 580 or Radeon HD 7870, 4 GB RAM, DirectX 11 and 4 GB of free storage. Recommended are a Core i5-4670K or Ryzen 5 1500X and a GTX 680 or Radeon HD 7970, also with 4 GB RAM. A broadband connection is listed for online features.

Steam's published game requirements still mention Windows 7 or newer in the 64-bit version. This is historical store text: the current Steam client has only supported Windows 10 or newer since January 2024. The details describe the base game, not necessarily every possible mod.

The action roguelike can be played alone or online with up to three friends. In a team, enemies are fought together, equipment is collected and teleporter events are survived. On supported consoles, additional platform subscriptions may be required for online features.

On PC, cross-platform play between the Steam and Epic Games Store versions is possible. According to Gearbox, the corresponding crossplay setting is required. This should not be equated with general crossplay between PC and all consoles.

According to the official store pages, owning Hallowed Concepts is enough for one person in the lobby for new areas, enemies and items to appear in the shared game. However, anyone who does not own the DLC themselves cannot select the new characters or permanently unlock the extended content. 2K has also announced restrictions on cross-generation matches between older and newer consoles.

The PC version on Steam offers full controller support and several customizable game options. These include adjustable difficulty, text size, camera comfort and separate volume settings, as well as stereo and surround sound. German is supported for the user interface; the language list does not promise full German voice acting.

The options may differ by platform. The Steam details should therefore not be taken as a blanket guarantee for every console version.
