Romancing SaGa 3 is a Japanese role-playing game in which eight main characters open up different paths through the same fantasy world. Originally released in 1995, the adventure relies on free choices, a changing party and turn-based battles. The HD remaster released in 2019 expands the classic with additional content.

Romancing SaGa 3 originally came out in 1995 for the Super Famicom in Japan. The HD remaster was released on Nov 11, 2019, for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. In Japan, the Steam release began on Nov 12 due to the time difference.

The HD remaster is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS and Android. On Windows, it is available through Steam. The separately announced reinterpretation Destinies United is a standalone game, not another platform version of this HD release.

Romancing SaGa 3 combines exploration, conversations, decisions and turn-based battles. Rather than following a strictly fixed order, you can tackle many locations and tasks in any sequence. The makeup of your travelling party changes your tactical options.

The Steam version requires at least a 64-bit processor at 2.0 GHz, 4 GB RAM, DirectX 11 and 2 GB of free storage. Radeon R7 and Intel HD Graphics 3000 are among the graphics solutions listed. The current Steam client requires Windows 10 or later.

At the start, you choose one of eight playable characters. Their starting situations, motives and encounters each give the adventure a different entry point. As the story goes on, your own route also determines which characters and tasks become important.

The game world allows many detours alongside the central storyline. Towns, dungeons and conversation partners open up different paths. As a result, there is no single sequence of events that is identical for all characters.

Every 300 years, a deadly celestial event threatens the world. Surviving children become key figures in the fate of entire kingdoms. Against this backdrop, the eight protagonists pursue their own goals and get drawn into larger conflicts.

Battles play out in turns. The party composition, the weapons used and the chosen abilities determine how an enemy is defeated. Different character roles allow for both offensive and defensive strategies.

Fighters can use different weapon types and special combat techniques. The options a party has depend on its members and how they develop. Decisions about equipment and abilities are especially important in longer battles.

Over the course of the adventure, the main characters meet potential companions. A varied party can take on different tasks. Choosing your allies is an important part of the open game design.

The 2019 version revamps the graphics of the original game and adds new scenarios. The additional dungeon Phantom Maze expands exploration. The original game structure, with eight protagonists and free travel, is retained.

New Game+ lets you start again after completing a playthrough. The feature is part of the HD remaster and adds to the different story paths of the eight protagonists. It makes it easier to try out another route.

Romancing SaGa 3 is also out for iOS and Android. The mobile versions include the HD remaster with its open role-playing structure. They are standalone releases for the respective mobile operating systems.

The PC version uses revamped pixel graphics and carries the classic role-playing scenes into higher resolution. Language and control options vary by platform. The respective stores determine which language is offered there.
