Tomb Raider: Anniversary
Tomb Raider: Anniversary is Crystal Dynamics' 2007 reinterpretation of the first Lara Croft adventure from 1996. The single-player action adventure combines exploration, acrobatics, environmental puzzles and battles over the mystical Scion artifact. Since November 2025, the emulated PS2 classic version has been officially available for PS4 and PS5.

Release
Tomb Raider: Anniversary came out in 2007. Steam dates the PC version to June 5, 2007. Since November 18, 2025, the PS2 game has also been offered as an emulated version for PS4 and PS5.

The original version came out in 2007 for PC, PS2, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360. For PS4 and PS5, Sony has offered an emulation of the PS2 version since November 2025. It is not a new graphical remaster, nor should it be equated with the simple backward compatibility of an old disc.

Gameplay
In Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Lara Croft explores ancient tombs, leaps over chasms, solves mechanical puzzles and fights dangerous animals. The focus is on orientation and precise movement in three-dimensional spaces. The controls were built on the technology of Tomb Raider: Legend.

Puzzles and acrobatics
Ledges, chasms, switches, moving mechanisms and underwater routes form connected obstacle areas. Solving one puzzle often only opens the next section of a difficult climbing route. The direct controls change the feel of play compared with the original from 1996.

History and locations
The story centers on Lara's search for the Scion artifact. It takes her through Peruvian landscapes, Egyptian ruins and facilities linked to the Atlantis myth. Crystal Dynamics based itself on the first Tomb Raider but reworked the flow and staging.

PS4 and PS5: emulated classic
Tomb Raider: Anniversary, available on the PlayStation Store since November 18, 2025, is according to Sony an emulation of the PS2 game. It is a current PS4/PS5 Store offer, not a version built on a new engine. The basic game structure remains the one from 2007.

Languages and accessibility
The PlayStation Store lists German voice acting and German on-screen text. Sony also mentions simple subtitles, volume control, basic controller remapping and manual save points. These details apply to the current Store versions, not automatically to every historical version.

Combat and enemies
Lara defends herself with her pistols against dangerous animals and other enemies. Combat relies on agility and evasive moves. A well-known encounter is the T-Rex in Lost Valley, whose staging reworks a key motif of the original.
