What is Shadow of the Tomb Raider?

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a single-player action-adventure game and the finale of the origins trilogy about Lara Croft, which began in 2013. The search for a Maya artefact takes Lara and her companion Jonah from Mexico into the Peruvian jungle. There she gets caught between the secret organisation Trinity and an impending catastrophe. The remote city of Paititi is an important setting.

The story combines exploration and climbing sections with stealth missions, combat and optional puzzle tombs. If you follow the campaign, you can manage without all side missions. Additional tomb chambers offer harder puzzles and rewards.

Gameplay

In the jungle, Lara uses mud, vegetation and the height differences of the environment to get past enemies or take them out from an ambush. In open terrain, she uses a bow, firearms and improvised tools. Collected resources can be used to craft and upgrade equipment.

Underwater caves, abseiling passages and vertical temple complexes expand exploration. Hidden paths and optional challenges reward thorough searching. Paititi also offers residents, side quests and access to further tombs.

The Switch 2 version released in 2026 is offered exclusively as the Definitive Edition. In October 2026, the Definitive Survivor Trilogy collection also came out, which includes this game together with its two predecessors.

The reimagined story of Lara Croft's beginnings started with Tomb Raider (2013) and continued with Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015). Shadow of the Tomb Raider continues the archaeologist's personal development and concludes this connected storyline.

Eidos-Montréal developed the third adventure together with Crystal Dynamics. Nixxes worked on the PC technology, while Feral Interactive released the macOS and Linux versions. The later Switch 2 port comes from Aspyr.
