What is Tomb Raider?
Tomb Raider (2013) restarts Lara Croft's story: on her first major research expedition, the crew of the Endurance runs into a storm and is stranded on Yamatai. Lara must search for her friends and leave an island where dangerous survivors, a violent cult and the mystery of the sun queen Himiko are connected.
The action-adventure combines cinematic escape and combat sequences with climbing, exploration and optional tombs. Lara's skills and gear develop as you progress. The game is neither the original Tomb Raider from 1996 nor its later reinterpretation Legacy of Atlantis, but the start of the Survivor trilogy.

Release
The PC version came out in early March 2013; the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions followed on March 5. Feral Interactive brought the adventure to Mac in January 2014. Also in early 2014, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with revamped visuals and the additional content available at the time.
On Nov 18, 2025, native versions of the Definitive Edition followed for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Since Feb 12, 2026, standalone ports for iOS and Android have also been available. The edition and platform history is therefore broader than the original release, without it being a new game with its own story.

DLCs and expansions
The original release received an additional challenge tomb, alternate Lara outfits and more maps and characters for multiplayer. The later Game of the Year Edition combines these additions.
The Definitive Edition revamps the visuals and includes the main game along with the expansions available at the time. On Switch and Switch 2, according to the official series website, digital bonus materials are also included, such as a comic, an artbook and making-of videos. These are versions of the same adventure, not separate sequels.
Since Oct 22, 2026, the Switch 2 version is also part of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy. The collection also includes Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration and Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition with their additional content.

Base camps and progress
Base camps serve as hubs where Lara learns skills, upgrades her gear and later travels between areas already reached. Equipment and weapons require materials, while experience points unlock new skills.
The skill tree covers the Survivor, Hunter and Brawler branches. These focus on different areas: exploration, resources, movement and handling tough encounters. Progress changes your playstyle without turning the story into a classic role-playing game.

Game series
Tomb Raider (2013) retells Lara Croft's beginnings and forms the first part of the Survivor trilogy. The story on Yamatai comes before the adventures in Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
It is neither the original 1996 Tomb Raider nor a remake of that first game. Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal developed the reboot, which was originally published by Square Enix. The current Steam release lists Crystal Dynamics as publisher, while Feral Interactive handled later PC and mobile ports.
