What is Devil May Cry 5?

Devil May Cry 5 is an action-focused single-player adventure from Capcom. A demonic invasion turns Red Grave City into a battlefield. Dante and Nero return as demon hunters, while the mysterious V offers a new perspective on events.

The focus is on staged missions, boss fights and technically demanding combos. It is not just about defeating enemies: players who skillfully link different attacks are rated with a higher style rank. The game world is not an open sandbox.

Release

The original Devil May Cry 5 was released on March 8, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, the separate Special Edition followed in 2020, offering additional game modes and technical features. The older console versions therefore do not become native re-releases.

On June 23, 2026, a standalone port for Nintendo Switch 2 followed as the Devil Hunter Edition. Its physical version came out on August 28, 2026. The product names of both re-releases matter, because the included content and features differ.

Platforms

The original version has native releases for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 version is called Devil Hunter Edition and is sold as a standalone release for that console.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: Here the technically standalone Special Editions exist. When the original PS4 or Xbox One version runs on new hardware, that is backward compatibility instead. The original release and the Special Edition are therefore separate products.

Gameplay

Devil May Cry 5 features fast third-person combat with swords and firearms, aerial combos, evasive maneuvers and unlockable abilities. In successive missions, the path leads through Red Grave City and demonically altered areas. Tougher enemies and boss duels regularly interrupt normal combat.

Defeated demons drop, among other things, Red Orbs, which can be used to unlock new moves and combat abilities. Weapons and techniques depend on the character.

DLCs and expansions

There are several smaller extras for the original PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions. They add things like Devil Breakers, alternative battle songs, costume colors, announcer voices or cutscenes. The Deluxe Edition bundles some of these without rebuilding the main campaign as a standalone game.

The additional playable Vergil is sold separately for these original versions. The Special Edition, which is technically equipped differently, and the Switch 2 Devil Hunter Edition already include Vergil. Expansion content and edition bundles therefore should not be equated with new native base game releases.

Nero, Dante and V: three fighting styles

Nero combines his sword Red Queen and the Blue Rose revolver with swappable mechanical arms, the Devil Breakers. The tools made by Nico open up extra options in melee combat and movement.

Dante can switch between different weapons and fighting styles, building long combo chains. V, by contrast, fights mainly indirectly: he directs summoned demons from a distance and must finish off enemies himself. This makes the three main characters play very differently.

Combos, style rank and replay value

The combat system rewards variety, timing and controlled attack sequences. Players who pressure enemies without long interruptions and vary their techniques raise the style rank shown on screen up to SSS. Repeating the same moves or taking frequent damage is less effective.

Missions can be replayed to test new weapon abilities and earn better ratings. Replay value therefore comes not only from additional difficulty levels, but also from learning more demanding movement and combo sequences.

Story and game world

In Red Grave City, a demonic threat spreads after a massive tree takes root. Nero teams up with mechanic Nico to fight the invasion, while Dante and V experience their own parts of the story. The campaign links the perspectives of the three characters into one shared story.

The focus is on the relationships between the demon hunters and their battles against powerful enemies. The game tells this story mainly through fixed missions and cutscenes, not through freely explorable cities or open quest lines.

Special Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series

The Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition came out in 2020 as a standalone version for the new console generation. Unlike the original version, it includes the enemy wave mode Legendary Dark Knight, a 1.2x faster Turbo mode and graphics options with higher frame rates. Ray tracing is available depending on the hardware and the selected mode. On Xbox Series S, ray tracing is explicitly not supported.

These features make the Special Edition more than just an edition with extra costumes. It has its own native releases on PS5 and Xbox Series. The corresponding keys belong to a separate product line and should not be confused with the original versions.

Devil Hunter Edition on Nintendo Switch 2

On Nintendo Switch 2, the version released in 2026 is called Devil Hunter Edition. Capcom names the playable characters Dante, Nero, V and Vergil, plus additional costume colors, special moves and music tracks. According to the manufacturer, the port runs at 60 frames per second both on TV and in handheld mode.

The digital version was released on June 23, 2026, the physical version on August 28, 2026. Nintendo lists HDR on compatible hardware and German on-screen text. The edition is a native Switch 2 release, not a backward-compatible version of an earlier Nintendo game.

Bloody Palace as a permanent challenge mode

Since April 1, 2019, the original version has offered the free Bloody Palace mode. It pits your character against a series of arenas with increasingly difficult enemy waves and bosses. A time limit adds extra pressure, while clean combos and skillful use of each ability remain key.

Bloody Palace is a permanent bonus game mode in the original Devil May Cry 5. It is not a new base game, nor should it be equated with the Legendary Dark Knight mode of the later Special Edition.

Single-player and cameo features

The Devil May Cry 5 campaign is mainly a single-player experience. In individual mission sections, the cameo system can show other players' characters in situations running in parallel. This does not change the basic structure of the linear story missions into a freely selectable co-op campaign.

The store listings for optional online features should therefore not be confused with a continuous shared mission mode. For combat progress, style ratings and character development, your own character remains the main factor.

Game series

Devil May Cry 5 was developed and published by Capcom. The fifth main entry follows on from the story of Dante and Nero and introduces V as another playable character. At its core, the series stays true to its style-rated demon hunting with firearms, swords and supernatural powers.

The game was built with Capcom's in-house RE Engine. Within the series, precision and learning complex techniques are central, while the different characters deliberately have distinct fighting patterns.
