What is Resident Evil 2?

Resident Evil 2 is Capcom's 2019 reimagining of the 1998 survival horror classic. It centers on police officer Leon S. Kennedy and student Claire Redfield, who take separate paths through the same events during the crisis in Raccoon City.

The remake uses a modern over-the-shoulder camera, combines exploration, inventory management and puzzles with deliberately scarce resources, and places a strong focus on atmosphere.

Resident Evil 2 released in Jan 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On Jun 14, 2022, native versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S followed, with technical improvements such as ray tracing, higher frame rates and 3D audio.

On Dec 10, 2024, an Apple version for supported iPhone, iPad and Mac devices was added. The native Nintendo Switch 2 version has been available since Oct 16, 2026 as a Deluxe Edition with already released bonus content.

Gameplay

Leon and Claire are controlled from a third-person perspective. Exploration, inventory management, puzzles and deliberately scarce equipment set the pace.

Many locations are interconnected: new keys and tools open previously inaccessible paths, while areas you already know become relevant again later under changed conditions.

Bonus content and Deluxe Edition

Resident Evil 2 received additional scenarios and optional bonus content after release. The Nintendo Switch 2 Deluxe Edition bundles the main game with a selection of already released content, including extra outfits and the original soundtrack.

Leon and Claire: two perspectives

The campaign can be played as Leon or Claire. Both characters sometimes visit the same locations, but they meet different supporting characters and have their own story focuses. The structure is therefore designed for multiple playthroughs.

PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2

The native PS5 and Xbox Series versions released in 2022 add ray tracing, higher frame rates and 3D audio to the original console releases. The PS5 version also adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version has been available as a standalone native Deluxe Edition since Oct 16, 2026. It is listed separately from the older platform versions.
