What is Monster Hunter Wilds?

Monster Hunter Wilds is an action RPG by Capcom and the next major main entry in the Monster Hunter series. As a hunter for the Research Commission, you travel to the Forbidden Lands, where people and monsters live in ecosystems that visibly change with weather shifts and other natural events.

The core remains the classic Monster Hunter loop: track down monsters, read their attacks, take them down with one of 14 weapon types, and forge stronger weapons and armor from the materials you gather. The campaign ties these hunts to the story of Nata, the Research Commission and the enigmatic Arkveld.

Platforms

Monster Hunter Wilds is available natively for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch 2 follows on Dec 4, 2026. Capcom is releasing the four platforms as separate versions of the base game.

Online hunts support crossplay between platforms. On PS5, up to four players can hunt together online. The Switch 2 version also adds local wireless multiplayer with other Switch 2 systems.

Capcom has now also shared technical targets for Switch 2. In docked mode, the “Prioritize resolution” mode reaches 2240 × 1260 pixels at 30 fps, while “Prioritize frame rate” outputs 1920 × 1080 pixels at 30 fps. In handheld mode, Capcom lists 1536 × 864 pixels at 30 fps. In especially demanding scenes, the frame rate may drop below the target. Ray tracing is not supported on Switch 2.

Gameplay

Hunting is built on 14 weapon types with their own movesets and roles. New in Wilds is the Focus Mode. It makes attacks and blocks more targeted and highlights wounds and visible weak points that can be exploited especially effectively with Focus attacks.

The mount Seikret makes travel through the large areas easier. It can lead the hunter automatically to targets and carries a second weapon, so you can switch equipment on the go. Dynamic weather changes alter flora, fauna and monster behavior, making the environment itself part of the hunt.

DLCs and expansions

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance releases in 2027 as a paid expansion for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The story continues. New areas, monsters and weapon actions expand the hunt, and the Master Rank adds more demanding battles.

The new areas include the Sky Ruins with floating islands and air currents. There, Araketa hunts in packs. The well-known monsters Teostra and Khezu also return. The Boost Armguard temporarily strengthens weapon actions. Hits fill its energy, and targeted attacks on wounds can extend the boost.

Alongside the expansion, Capcom has announced a permanent change to character creation: hunters and Palicos can be remade as often as you like with a free update, even without buying Ascendance.

Monster Hunter Wilds is part of Capcom's Monster Hunter series, which dates back to 2004. The main games combine hunts on huge monsters with upgrading equipment from materials you gather. Wilds builds on this core idea with crossplay, smoother transitions between areas and ecosystems that react to weather and other natural events.
