Gameplay

Battles are turn-based and take place on three-dimensional battlefields. Position, height differences and turn order determine when units can reach enemies or stay out of danger.

You spread attacks, spells and support abilities across a small group of characters. Because fallen allies can be lost for good, protecting weakened characters and the order of actions are especially important.

Ramza, Delita and the War of the Lions

In the kingdom of Ivalice, two influential noble factions fight for regency over their underage successor after the ruler's death. The conflict becomes the War of the Lions.

Ramza Beoulve comes from a respected noble family, while his childhood friend Delita is of lower rank. Their different experiences determine which side of the political conflicts they stand on and which decisions they make.

Jobs and party composition

More than 20 jobs open different paths for your battle party. Knights and other melee fighters can hold the front line, while Black Mages, Time Mages, Summoners or Thieves take on other roles.

You can change jobs and combine learned abilities with other classes. This creates parties that focus on magic, battlefield control or direct damage.

How do the characters develop?

Through battles, characters unlock new abilities and expand their options across different jobs. Square Enix lists over 300 abilities, from which individual combinations can be built.

Chocobos and other creatures can also strengthen your party. The development of individual allies and the makeup of the group are therefore closely linked.

The revised version offers modernized graphics, voiced dialogue, a redesigned user interface and additional conversations. You can adjust the difficulty, check turn order more easily, speed up battles and move the camera across the field in the tactical view.

The classic version follows the look and feel of the 1997 original. It uses the well-known translation from The War of the Lions and also offers some comfort features.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

The remaster was released for both Nintendo consoles on Sep 30, 2025. Switch 2 has its own edition, which should be distinguished from the original Switch release.

Game series

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS uses the familiar job system of Final Fantasy, but its gameplay focuses on strategic battles rather than a classic journey with ongoing random encounters. Chocobos, Black Mages and other familiar elements appear in the kingdom of Ivalice in a standalone story.

The remaster is based on FINAL FANTASY TACTICS from 1997. It should not be equated with the later PSP version, The War of the Lions.
