Gameplay

In battle, players switch between Cloud, Tifa, Barret and Aerith. Direct attacks fill the ATB gauge, which triggers spells, items and special abilities. Materia adds further effects to weapons and equipment.

Summons and the individual Limit attacks also help against stronger enemies. If you combine characters, abilities and enemy weaknesses skilfully, you can shape battles in a targeted way.

The story of Midgar

Cloud Strife supports the resistance group Avalanche in the city of Midgar. There, the Shinra Company extracts energy from Mako while the conflict over the future of the planet escalates.

The remake expands the Midgar section of the 1997 original into a standalone adventure with additional scenes and deeper character stories. The focus is on Cloud's relationships with Tifa, Barret and Aerith.

Simplified progression on Xbox and Switch 2

The Xbox and Switch 2 versions include the "Streamlined Progression" option. It lets players, for example, keep their HP and MP permanently refilled, use the ATB and Limit gauges without limits, and deal attacks of up to 9,999 damage.

These aids make it easier to follow the story. If you prefer the original challenge, you can play without these aids.
