Platforms

The game was released natively for Windows and macOS, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS, and later for iOS and Android. The Windows version uses keyboard or gamepad. The Mac version, developed by Feral Interactive, came out in February 2013. Handhelds and smartphones have adapted controls and sometimes different features.

A standalone PlayStation 5, Xbox Series or Switch version does not exist. Running an older game on new hardware does not count as a new platform release.

Gameplay

In Middle-earth, you switch between characters with different abilities. Gandalf uses magic, Legolas fires his bow and Frodo can squeeze through tight spots or get past enemies. Combat and environmental puzzles lead through well-known locations from the film trilogy.

Beyond the main tasks, you can discover new characters, items and secrets. The freely accessible areas connect many locations from the films.

DLCs and expansions

The adventure covers the stories of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Together, the three films make up the base game and are not chapters you buy separately.

The standalone LEGO The Hobbit tells a different story from Middle-earth and is not included with LEGO The Lord of the Rings.
