Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a narrative single-player action adventure from Eidos-Montréal. As Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, you lead Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot through a self-contained adventure in the Marvel universe.

You control Star-Lord directly, use his companions' abilities in combat and make dialogue choices that affect relationships within the group.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was released on Oct 26, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On Nintendo Switch, a cloud version was available in 2021.

The standalone Encore Edition, which runs natively on Nintendo Switch 2, releases on Nov 5, 2026. It includes additional outfits in the style of 1980s glam rock.

The adventure was released natively for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On the first Nintendo Switch it is streamed over the internet as a cloud version. The Encore Edition for Switch 2, by contrast, runs directly on the new console.

GeForce NOW is an additional streaming option on supported devices, not a native PC or console version of its own.

You play only as Star-Lord and fire at enemies with his elemental blasters. At the same time, you give Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot commands so they use their special abilities at the right moment. This lets you pin down groups of enemies, break their defences or take them out in a targeted way.

Between battles, the team explores unfamiliar places, solves minor obstacles and holds conversations. The individual Guardians react to Star-Lord’s decisions, which changes group dynamics and some scenes.

On PC, the game requires Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB or Radeon RX 570, and 80 GB of free storage. 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1660 Super or Radeon RX 590 are recommended.

Twelve years after a major galactic war, Star-Lord and his crew travel the cosmos together. An incident causes their own decisions to grow into a threat to the galaxy. The adventure tells a standalone story with well-known Marvel characters, instead of retelling the plot of the movies.

Peter Quill is the character you play directly. With his elemental blasters, jet boots and mobile attacks, you keep enemies at a distance or switch positions in combat. The other Guardians support you on command.

Gamora deals high damage to specific targets. Drax throws enemies off balance. Rocket uses explosives against groups, while Groot pins down enemies and protects the team. The abilities can be combined in combat and gradually expanded.

With the huddle function, Star-Lord gathers his companions for a short motivational speech. The chosen response can give the team a boost in the fight that follows. Well-known rock songs underline these sequences.

In conversations, you decide how Star-Lord reacts to his companions and other characters. The dialogue choices can change how group members behave or how individual scenes develop. The story remains a closed single-player adventure and not a freely branching simulation.

The soundtrack combines specially composed music with well-known rock and pop songs from the 1980s. The selection draws on Star-Lord’s love of the music of his childhood. Songs also accompany combat situations and moments between the characters.

Between fights you lead the Guardians through unfamiliar locations and interact with the environment. Their companions’ abilities help you overcome obstacles and open paths. Conversations and smaller exploration sections give the story its rhythm.

The Guardians learn additional combat moves. Star-Lord can acquire various upgrades over the course of the adventure and unlock new abilities for his team members. The progression expands the interplay of blaster attacks and group abilities.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is designed for single players only. Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot accompany Star-Lord as computer-controlled team members. You control their actions with commands, not with additional players.

The Encore Edition releases on Nov 5, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2. It includes the full main game and all previously released digital content. In addition, there are five glam rock outfits designed exclusively for this version, for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot.

The new version supports mouse controls for menus and aiming, as well as gyro controls in certain scenes. It is designed for TV, tabletop and handheld mode.

The version for the original Nintendo Switch is played as a cloud version. It needs a stable internet connection because the game is streamed. The Switch 2 Encore Edition is a standalone release and not just an unlock of the older cloud version.

At the original launch, there was a Digital Deluxe Edition alongside the standard release, with digital extras and additional costumes. The Encore Edition for Switch 2 includes glam rock outfits designed specifically for it. The different packages do not change the core single-player story.

The game shows combat from a third-person perspective. On PC it supports HDR and customisable graphics settings, among other things. On consoles, technical options and control features vary by platform.

The Switch 2 mouse function lets you use menus and aim weapons. Motion controls let you steer the Milano in space or affect Peter’s movement when sliding and in zero gravity. These control options are part of the Switch 2 re-release.
