What is Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom's first new main entry in the Onimusha series in more than 20 years. This single-player action game combines historical motifs from early Edo-period Japan with dark fantasy: you play as Miyamoto Musashi, moving through a Kyoto warped by miasma and fighting the demonic Genma.

The focus is deliberately on swordplay. Musashi does carry the supernatural Oni Glove, but Capcom builds the game mainly around direct duels, parries, deflections, Issen counters and reading enemy attacks.

Gameplay

Musashi's fighting style relies on switching between attack and reaction. Normal attacks are combined with blocks, parries and evasive moves; projectiles can be deflected, and precise Issen counters reward good timing with especially powerful counterattacks. The Oni Glove expands this foundation with superhuman abilities and lets you absorb the souls of defeated Genma.

Combat is clearly built around cinematic close-quarters duels, without reducing the game to individual boss arenas. Between fights, Musashi explores different areas of Kyoto, looks for routes and resources, and meets enemies that demand different responses to blocking, parrying and positioning.

Kyoto, Miyamoto Musashi and the Genma

The story moves the Onimusha fantasy to a distorted Kyoto of the early Edo period. Real places such as Kiyomizu-dera are linked to local myths and Capcom's Genma lore. At the center is Miyamoto Musashi; the late samurai film legend Toshiro Mifune served as the model for his face.

Musashi gets drawn into conflict with the Genma, who come up from the underworld, and meets both historical figures and supernatural enemies. Capcom has built the story so that it stays easy to follow without prior knowledge of the older Onimusha games.

Oni Gauntlet and Souls

The Oni Glove is more than a story device: it lets Musashi absorb the souls of defeated Genma and use their energy as a resource. Add Oni powers and special weapons that expand classic swordplay rather than replacing it.

With this, Way of the Sword builds on a long-running core idea of the series: human swordsmanship meets supernatural Oni powers.
